In 2012-13, the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta is celebrating its centenary. A remarkable hundred years of service to the profession and the public it has been. Our graduates have served the profession provincially, nationally and internationally; they have become academic lawyers in a host of law schools throughout the common law world; and they have staffed the judicial branch both here in Canada (The Right Honourable Beverly McLachlin, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, is one of ours) and abroad.

The Centenary of the Faculty of Law provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our rich history. We are hosting many interesting events throughout the year, with the Centenary Gala having kicked off our year-long celebrations on September 21, 2012. We are hosting a U of A Faculty of Law Centenary Speakers Series throughout the 12-months period, entitled, 'The Law Forum Centenary Speakers series', with many engaging and respected scholars invited to speak on a variety of law-related subjects to students, faculty and the general public. Our Centenary Convocation & reception will take place on June 4, 2013, and our Centenary Year will culminate with the two and a half day Centenary Conference. The conference entitled, The Future of Law School, will take place from the evening of Thursday, September 26, through to the end of day Saturday, September 28, 2013, with many interesting and leading minds invited to speak on a variety of law-related subjects to students, faculty and the general public. Please check back regularly as there are a number of yet to be announced major centenary events.

Centenary Conference

Our Centenary Year will culminate with the two and a half day Conference, The Future of Law School, that will take place from Thursday evening 26 September through to the end of day Saturday 28 September 2013.

The Conference's legacy will reside primarily in kindling a passionate public and professional debate concerning what's wrong and what must be righted in professional legal education and with that, the profession of law. This legacy will take shape, in part, and linger in time, through the publication by the University of Alberta Press of an edited collection of Conference papers, presentations, debates, and decisions.

Centenary - List of Firsts

The Centenary of the Faculty of Law provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our rich history. We would like to use the occasion to tell the tale of the Faculty in an unusual, personal and interactive way by establishing a List of U of A Firsts. Over the course of our centenary year, we will be posting a List of Firsts that demonstrates the extraordinary achievements of the Faculty, its students and staff. The List of Firsts will describe significant achievements in many fields: legal, judicial, artistic, sporting, cultural and every other sector of life. Some of the achievements will astonish even our most of informed alumni, friends and faculty members.

We would be delighted to receive all your comments, and suggestions for adding to the list, so that we can ultimately compile an interesting and valuable historical record.
